Firefox 3 launched earlier this week and the downloads were audited for the first 24 hours it was available in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record. Mozilla says that the software was downloaded more than 8 million times in the first 24 hours.
Despite a record setting launch, security firms found flaws in the browser already. Mozilla had trouble from the start trying to set the record when the servers crashed under the traffic load from users looking for the new version.
At the busiest point the servers were handling more than 9,000 downloads per minute. In only 5 hours Firefox 3 broke the download record set by Firefox 2 of 1.6 million downloads back in 2006. Mozilla had predicted 5 million downloads on day one, and ended up with 8.3 million.
