EU Wants to Charge Mobile Users for Incoming Calls

While the EU is fighting to cut down roaming charges for mobile users on one hand it is proposing a new charge on incoming calls on the other. The proposal would have Europeans paying for incoming calls even in their home countries.

EU telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding told the financial Times she was open to that in exchange for lower termination rates. Reding notes that the rules would not be in place for another decade even if adopted.

Reding is pushing a campaign to reduce roaming charges, which can go as high as 50p a minute. Caps placed on these calls won’t help in many eyes, the mobile companies will simply raise prices elsewhere.
