Australian ACCC forces eBay to Stop Plans to Force PayPal Only

It seems that the Australian government has stepped in and forced eBay to stop plans to force Aussies to only be able to accept PayPal as a payment method on their auction sales. The Register reports that the change was to go worldwide if it worked in Australia.

Starting on next Tuesday Australian sellers would have only been able to use PayPal on their options, blocking the ability to take checks and use their own credit card merchant accounts for payments. Last May eBay began forcing sellers to offer PayPal as an option.

The ACCC has said that it is concerned that eBay’s market power to force PayPal as the only payment option will lessen competition. Because of these worries the ACCC has asked eBay to suspend its introduction of PayPal only until a full decision can be made.
