According to Times Online cellular network based broadband connectivity could overtake wired broadband via cable or phone companies in as little as two years. Factors contributing to this fast change are the falling prices of mobile broadband and greater network coverage.

With the proliferation of notebooks now shipping with embedded mobile broadband modems Times Online says one in ten broadband users now connect via cellular connections to the Internet. This is a huge number when you consider that many broadband cellular modems have only been on the market for a bit under a year.

This change comes at a time when more traditional broadband providers in the US are looking at ways to charge more for the bandwidth customers use by going to usage based billing. As long as cellular providers continue to offer unlimited bandwidth we may see wired Internet connections becoming uncommon over the next few years around the world.
