Toshiba has announced a new series of 1.8-inch HDDs for consumer electronic devices that use the SATA interface and have a capacity of up to 160GB. Toshiba says that this is the first drive of this type to reach this capacity.

The drives have a fast 5400 RPM rotational speed and the drives can be had in 80GB capacity as well. Toshiba also says that the new drives have a 25% improvement on power usage and have 17% faster data access than previous 1.8-inch drives from Toshiba.

The drives will enter mass production in August according to Toshiba. The 160GB drive uses two platters and the 80GB drive uses a single platter. Average seek time is 15ms and the 160GB drive weighs 62g with the 80GB drive weighing 60g. Operating shock resistance is 500G with non operating shock resistance of 1500G.
