Columbia buys 65,000 XO Laptops

The OLPC XO Notebook has not been the success that the OLPC had hoped for after facing stiff competition from other entrants into the ultra-low cost notebook segment, product delays, and cost overruns.

Despite the problems surrounding the XO notebook it has seen some sales with the first order going to Peru. Today BBC News reports that Columbia has placed an order for 65,000 of the XO notebooks. Columbia says that small rural towns will get the first 15,000 XO notebooks ordered and will be distributed over the next 18 months.

A separate deal is reportedly being negotiated to buy XO laptops for schools in and around the state capitol of Manizales. The OLPC also recently announced its plans for the XO 2 with dual touch screens to be available in 2010.
