Anyone who owns a mobile phone and likes to text message knows how expensive text messaging can be. According to a scientist from the Channel 4 programme called The Mobile Phone Rip-Off those text messages cost more than space exploration.
According to Dr. Nigel Banister the average SMS text message costs 5p and getting a megabyte of data from the Hubble space telescope costs £85. When you sit down and do the math according to PC Advisor a single text message can take up a max of 140 bytes.
It would take 7490 text messages to send the same 1MB of data via SMS. At the 5p per text that would work out to around £375 for 1MB of data via texting. Maybe NASA and other space agencies should look into texting data to and from space.
