MSI Wind Notebook Review Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review The MSI wind is one of the most recent competitors to the Asus Eee in the tiny netbook category. Pocket-lint got its hands on one and says that the good points of the rig are the Atom CPU, great screen and big keyboard.

The bad point is poor battery life. The end verdict is that the screen and keyboard are fantastic and the Wind doesn’t compromise on usability or features. The review unit used an Intel Atom N270 running at 1.6GHz. Read more

Dell Getting Into Mini-Notebook Market Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Dell is getting into the lower cost mini-notebook market to compete against the Asus Eee. Michael Dell himself unveiled the little red notebook to Brian Lam from Gizmodo at the All Things Digital Conference. Dell’s official blog says Dell “positioned it as the perfect device for the next billion internet users.”

No specs or pricing have been announced for the device, but it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to see it come with the recently announced Intel Atom processor. Performance won’t be record setting in such a small machine, but it should serve well for some users. Read more

Columbia buys 65,000 XO Laptops Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review The OLPC XO Notebook has not been the success that the OLPC had hoped for after facing stiff competition from other entrants into the ultra-low cost notebook segment, product delays, and cost overruns.

Despite the problems surrounding the XO notebook it has seen some sales with the first order going to Peru. Today BBC News reports that Columbia has placed an order for 65,000 of the XO notebooks. Columbia says that small rural towns will get the first 15,000 XO notebooks ordered and will be distributed over the next 18 months. Read more

Asus sort of Announces Eee PC 1000 Series Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Asus has a real winner on its hands with the Eee line of small and cheap notebook computers. Most recently it announced the Eee 900 series that features a larger 9-inch display and some new tech. Some journalists are saying that they received an invite to an Asus event at Computex that announced a new product in a roundabout way.

The invitation reportedly says come join Asus for the introduction of the Eee PC 901 and the Eee PC 1000 series. The catch is that Asus doesn’t yet have a 1000 series Eee. Read more

OLPC Promises New XO Notebook by 2010 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review The OLPC group has only recently begun selling its XO notebook to governments in developing countries around the world. In fact so far the response to its XO notebook hasn’t been that great. The XO was originally said to be offered for $100 USD and ended up costing in the area of $188 USD.

Despite the difficulties and less than stellar sales the OLPC has already announced it plans to update the XO by 2010. This time the little device is going all high-tech with dual touch screens. You have to wonder at the ability of the OLPC to produce such a notebook at a price anywhere near the $100 UDS mark. Read more

ASUS to Launch EBox Desktop Version of Eee Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Asus has been preparing a desktop version of the Eee notebook for a while now and the first images of the system have now appeared. The desktop system will be dubbed the EBox and will run on the Eee’s Linux OS.

The system looks very similar to the Wii, especially in the white color and a black version is available. The systems will have 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The remainder of the specs for the EBox are not being announced. Read more

HP Mini-Note Laptop Reviewed Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review The lads at Pocket-lint have got their mitts on a NP 2133 Mini-note laptop and reviewed it and compared to the Asus Eee. They say the good points are the size and build quality. The bad points are the track pad and glossy screen.

The final verdict is that the 2133 offers more oomph than the Eee for the money and will run Windows Vista. The 2133 weighs 1.27 kg and has a 9.9-inch screen. Compared to the Eee the 2133 is wider and heaver, though more sturdy. Read more

OLPC XO Notebook gets Windows XP Version Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Microsoft seems intent on getting its Windows Operating system into the hands of people all over the world, including children in poor and undeveloped countries. Microsoft and the OLPC have teamed up to put Windows XP on the XO laptop.

The much more mainstream Windows operating system could make the low cost systems more appealing to countries whose infrastructure already uses Windows products and whose teachers and employees may be more familiar with Windows. Read more

O2 UK Launches the Novatel Wireless MC930D USB Modem Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Novatel Wireless and O2 UK announced today that the Novatel Wireless Ovation MC930D USB modem was now available on the O2 network in the UK. The device is being marketed as the O2 Mobile Broadband USB Modem.

The device has been optimized for Europe, but is a globally operating modem and can hit download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and upload speeds of 2.1 Mbps on any worldwide HSPDA/HSUPA network. The modem is very small with measurements of only 70 x 25 x 12 mm. Pricing is unknown at this time. Read more

Aldi 15.4-inch Notebook Gets Price Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review We talked a bit about the Aldi 15.4-inch notebook a while back that promised lots of performance and a low price. The notebook has a 15.4-inch 1280 x 800 screen, a 320GB HDD, 3GB of DDR2, Express Card DVB-T TV tuner, 8X DVD writer, 4-in-1 card reader and more.

The heart of the notebook is an Intel T5550 processor. The machine also has a HDMI port and an eSATA port along with an integrated webcam and array mic. The biggest thing that was missing from the specifications for the machine was the price. Read more

Apple Profits Soar

Apple Profits Soar Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review According to BBC News strong Mac sales have pushed Apple’s profits significantly with a new profit of $1.05 billion up from $770 million the same quarter last year. Apple says it shipped 2,289,000 Mac computers during the quarter, a surge of 51%.

BBC News says that international sales made up 44% of Apple’s revenue with total revenue of $7.51 billion in the quarter. Apple also reportedly sold 10,644,000 iPods and shipped 1.7 million iPhone’s. Read more
