HP Jumps Into Smartphone Wars

With Apple grabbing such a large part of the smartphone market away from the more established players it was only a matter of time until other traditionally PC making companies followed suit. HP is now back in the smartphone market with a line of iPAQ devices.
The handsets include the iPAQ Data Messenger and Voice Messenger phones. The Data Messenger has a full sliding QWERTY keyboard and a 2.8-inch touchscreen. Read more

Apple Beats RIM in Smartphone Sales

The economy may be in recession across the US and many other countries, but that hasn’t stopped Apple from posting increased revenue and profits. Apple says that its Q4 revenue grew 27% and profits climbed 26%.
Apple says it has sold nearly 7 million iPhone 3G units this quarter. That amount means Apple beat Jobs' goal of selling 10 million of the iPhone 3G's by year-end, 13 million have already been sold. Read more

Mobile Phones Causing a Skin Rash

Since the day mobile phones first launched years ago they have induced a rash of stupidity in users. I guess I can see where the phones could actually cause a skin rash as well. The British Association of Dermatologists issued a warning to mobile phone users that the handsets could cause a skin rash.
The association says that too much use of the mobile phone could be causing the rashes. The rash itself is described as itchy and red, typically occurs on the cheek or ear depending on where the phone touches the user. Read more

Motorola Android Smartphone coming Next Year

The word is that Motorola is preparing a new Android smartphone that will likely not ship until sometime next year, leaving the G1 from T-Mobile as the only likely Android device available over this holiday season.
The Motorola handset is reported to look very similar to the G1 with a touchscreen and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The phone is supposedly going to be focused on social networking for accessing Facebook and MySpace. Read more

Google Confirms Android Has Kill Switch

Google has apparently taken a page from Apple's book with a kill switch for applications on mobile phones. Google confirmed that a kill switch is built into Android devices that can disable any application running on the handset.
The feature is intended to protect users from applications that are running malicious code. Google says that should it have to use the kill switch it will attempt to refund users who purchased the application and recoup the money from the developer. Read more

T-Mobile UK Gets G1 on October 30th

T-Mobile in the UK is getting the new Android powered G1 mobile smartphone on October 30th. According to Stuff.tv, pre-orders for the device are already stacking up and the device looks to be a holiday season winner.
Two plans will reportedly be offered to start with including a Combi 35 with 800 minutes and a Flext 40 with 1,250 minutes or 2,500 text messages. Both plans will offer unlimited web browsing. Read more

BlackBerry Storm Reviewed

It was just this week that details of the BlackBerry Storm were leaked onto the web and today we have reviews of the phone already. The Storm lacks the keyboard BlackBerry fans are familiar with and goes to an iPhone style touchscreen onscreen keyboard. According to Telegraph, the keyboard is a triumph.
The onscreen keyboard is described as, as close as you can get to typing on real keys. The screen feels like it is pressing down under the weight of your finger according to the reviewer. Battery life is solid and the built-in GPS runs maps well. Read more

T-Mobile Loses Customer Data

The UK government isn't the only place personal data of citizens is being lost. T-Mobile has reported the loss of data on nearly 17 million German customers with personal details including email and phone numbers.
It could have been worse, no financial data was lost so the worse people will likely see are more sales calls and spam to the email account. Read more

Nokia Comes with Music Handsets only at Carphone Warehouse

If you had your sights set on a mobile with Nokia's new Comes With Music service, don’t bother looking at the stores of the four big mobile providers in the UK. Vodafone, O2, Orange, and T-Mobile are not expected to stock handsets featuring the service in their retail stores.
Rather Carphone Warehouse is gearing up to be the sole provider of handsets with the service for the holiday season. The service is intriguing and music lovers will like the idea. You can download all the music you want for free for a year and keep the tracks afterwards. Read more

Adobe Says its Waiting for Apple to Launch Flash for iPhone

One of the biggest shortcomings of the iPhone is the lack of flash support. For a while, you may have believed this lack was Adobe's fault. Apparently, that isn’t the case; it appears Apple is holding back the Flash show.
Reports are coming in that say Adobe has said it has Flash for the iPhone basically ready to launch and is merely waiting on Apple to give the go ahead. Adobe is reported to say that if Apple gives the nod, a flash player for the iPhone would be ready in a short time. Read more

Thin 8MP LG Camera Phone Spied

LG announced a thin 13.9mm thick camera phone with 8MP resolution called the KC-780. Specifications of the phone are scant, but just eyeballing the images of the phone is looks like the camera is the biggest feature.
The device uses a slider design with a numeric keypad that slides from the bottom of the screen. Controls appear rather simple. Read more
